Answer

There isn't necessarily any one database that might cover this particular topic - there are several resources that might be of use. Databases to use include Academic OneFile, Academic Search Complete, and LexisNexis Academic. You might also find some of the other articles databases in the Issues & Controversies research guide to be of use. Statistics and other useful information may also be found from the United Nations Demographic Yearbook, World Health Organization and Guttmacher Institute (they are a research organization specifically concerned with sexual/reproductive health worldwide).

Possible search terms for use in electronic databases and other publications include:

  • teen pregancy
  • teenage pregnancy
  • teen mothers
  • teenage mothers

Different resources may use different terms - sometimes you have to try multiple searches, even in the same database.

When you have a list of articles, take a look at article titles, as well as the journal titles and subjects for that article (if listed). For example, an article titled Teenage Pregnancy: A Socially Inflicted Health Hazard, lets you know the article deals with teenage pregnancy, but when you also look at where the article appeared (the journal title), the Indian Journal of Community Medicine, then you realize the article probably deals with teenage pregnancy in India.

Some example searches:

In the Academic OneFile database:

  • Click the Browse Subjects button - in the yellow bar.
  • Type teenage pregnancy in the search box.
  • In the Limit Results section of the screen check the "Full Text" box.
  • Click the Go button.
  • Find Teenage Pregnancy in the list of results and click the "+" sign to view Subdivisions about teenage pregnancy - you may need to use several subdivisions & peruse the article titles, journal titles to get to information about teen pregnancy in other countries.

In the Academic Search Complete database:

  • Type teenage pregnancy in the search box.
  • In the Limit Your Results section of the screen check the "Full Text" box.
  • Click the Search button.
  • Browse the article titles, subjects, journal titles to get to information about teen pregnancy in other countries.

In the LexisNexis Academic database:

  • Find the Search the News box.
  • In the Search For box, type teenage pregnancy.
  • Click the Go button.
  • On the left side of the results screen, find the word Geography and click the "+" sign to view news articles published in certain geographic regions - articles being published in a certain region probably deal with teenage pregnancy in that geographic area.
